Our Perseids meteor watch brought together 28 people. We started the night with an orientation session covering the basics of meteors and meteor showers, followed by telescope observations before settling in for the meteor watch. We observed several deep-sky objects, and as the sky changed through the night, Jupiter and Saturn also made an appearance.
Meteor watching began around 1:30 AM, and we saw around 30 meteors through the night. Clouds covered the sky from roughly 2:30 to 3:30 AM, but after that we were able to continue watching through gaps in the clouds. We kept notes of every meteor we observed and tried tracing their paths on an all-sky chart. By extending the meteor trails backwards, we could see them converging towards the Perseid radiant. With 12 women and 5 children among the 28 participants, women made up almost half of the group. We want our observing events to be welcoming and accessible to everyone, and particularly to women and families. The participation at this event was a great reflection of that.
