Have approved your request. We are typically cautious with WhatsApp profiles that don’t have a DP or full name due to past experience with spammers.

Hi, my name is aarnav and i jined a few months ago. my father is thinking of getting a teescope for me, but i cant seem to understand how the EQ mount telescope works. im only 13 years old btw. could anyone explain?

Hi @R0bertGoddard, I’m going to assume a few things here. That you are a beginner, not going to do astrophotography, and having a limited budget.
If the above is correct, IMO, you are better off with a Newtonian on a Dobsonian mount because, the budget equatorial mounts (with scopes) are too flimsy to handle the scopes that they come with, especially at higher magnifications.

This 6" dob comes with a 2" focuser with micro adjustment, decent set of eyepieces and it’s F8 (1200/150) and hence collimation is easy and will go with cheap Plossl eyepieces. It won’t be as heavy as the 8" version.

Thank you @vijay . I’m currently looking into the Dobsonian mounts. when i looked it up online, i only saw AT and EQ telescopes. The price range is around 20k i guess(I haven’t actually talked to my mom yet :rofl:) Today i saw the Celestron 130EQ Powerseeker and it seems good and within price range. Can anyone give their opinion on the Powerseeker series as I’m completely lost here. does it count as one of those flimsy ones?

I was mistaken. I meant powerseeker 127EQ. There is only an astromaster for 130EQ. here are the links to both

The Astromaster is an F5 with a spherical primary mirror of questionable quality. It comes with two bad eyepieces. The Powerseeker is even worse. As I mentioned before, EQ mounts at that price point are not meant for 5"+ Newtonians.

Dobsonian mounts are cheaper and sturdier. The following one should be pretty good for the price. It doesn’t come with a 2" focuser, but the 1.25 focuser is a Crayford type. It also comes with two pretty good eyepieces.
