M57, the Ring Nebula

M57, the Ring Nebula in Lyra.

This is a planetary nebula located about 2000 light years away. When low-mass stars like our Sun reach the end of their red giant stage they expel their outer layers creating a shell of ionized gases that are illuminated with a remnant white dwarf at the center.
