Talk Description:
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration has produced the first-ever images of supermassive black holes on the scale of their event horizons: M87* and Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the black hole at the centre of our own Galaxy. But how do you take a picture of something from which even light cannot escape? And what can these images really tell us about black holes?
We will begin by exploring how the EHT works and how these remarkable images are reconstructed from observations made by telescopes around the world. We will then see how the images provide compelling evidence for the existence and nature of black holes, and what they reveal about the extreme behaviour of gravity. Along the way, we will discuss what the EHT has taught us about black holes and how these observations allow us to put Einstein’s theory of gravity to the test.
Finally, time permitting, we will look ahead to the next frontier: black hole movies. What happens when we can watch these gargantuan monsters evolve in time, and what new mysteries might we be able to uncover?
