Astronomy Night for Kids

We had an overnight astronomy session for 12 kids yesterday.

Since we were expecting very poor weather, we planned a whole bunch of activities to keep the kids engaged.

We started off with a walk to demonstrate the scale of the solar system, did experiments on how craters form, why Venus and Mercury show phases, and spoke about a lot of things the kids were curious about.

We then had a small window through the clouds and we managed to show them Jupiter, Venus, Castor A&B, and Omega Centauri. After this, we went for dinner and came back for building balloon powered Mars Rovers.

The kids had fun, and @linusnelson and I had even more fun

This was the club’s first dark site event dedicated for kids and we wanted to do it with some known people before we open it up publicly. We now have the confidence to do this for all of you and let’s plan something before the summer vacations end.

Hello,

I’m Zack, a new member. My 8-year-old son has a keen interest in astronomy — he regularly follows content on black holes, wormholes, and planetary moons. I’d like to introduce him to a more hands-on learning experience through the club.

Could you please share the following details regarding the Astronomy Night for Kids program:

  • Age suitability and what to expect

  • Topics and objects covered (planets, moon, deep sky objects)

  • Registration process

Also, is there a WhatsApp group for members or parents I could join for updates?

Thank you. — Zack

Hey Zack!

It’s great to know about your son’s interest in astronomy and it’s impressive that he knows about all these at his age!

You are welcome to bring your kid to all our events and not wait for a kids night. We almost always have small kids in our star parties and meetups.

The registration process is straightforward, just sign up whenever our events open up - we give priority to kids so don’t worry too much about it.
